One evening in January in Cupertino...

First off, please forgive me for posting this more than a little bit delinquent. Just over a week ago Anna and I drove down to Cupertino to experience an event far too uncommon these days. Due largely to unfortuante geography and ever-conflicting schedules, the spectacle of a real Jensky family gathering has become rare. But what they lack in frequency they more than make up for in energy.
Here's the photographic proof! The occasion for the visit was a slew of birthdays that happen to fall in January -- Jay (on the end) and Jill's (second from right)...
And the young lady in the middle, my grandmother, who turned 96 this January.

To call it a wild gathering really doesn't begin to capture the sheer celebration of one of our get togethers. You are certain to leave not only with a stomach full of good food, but a sore stomach from laughing too hard.

I should note that very early in our relationship Anna survived a gathering. All things considered, it was a fairly mild event comparitively speaking, but still I'm glad to say she's still around twelve years hence.

Oh, and if you're wondering, yes, that is a Christmas tree. My mom's Christmas tree, to be exact, dressed up with balloons and made over as a "Happy Birthday Tree."

Here we are with my mom and my two neices, Bailey and Kaitlin, in front of the the birthday tree. I find it difficult to type the words "birthday tree" with a straight face.
We drove down for the dinner -- it was Sunday, January 27th -- and then had to turn around and drive back, so the evening was over far too soon, particularly because of how rarely we all get together. But the memories are always unforgettable, and until the stars align again and the Jensky clan gathers again under one roof, we've got the stories to laugh about!

Dog Parents

Long story short: We're dog parents. I'll go on in more detail later. Here's the first (pathetic-cameraphone shot) picture:

He came with the name "Levi" but that seems waaay to Mormon. So we'll see. More pics to come.

The dog has a name -- Winston!

And here are the obligatory new-dog-parent photos and (youtube willing) even a video (ooooh):

Dog's First Beach Trip

Today both Anna and I took the day off to be together. Well, together with Winston. He's been a great companion, case in point
So we decided to take him down to our favorite beach -- Portuguese Beach -- for his first ocean-beach experience.
Unfortunately, the weather conspired against us; while today we have beautiful blue sky with some scattered clouds, it's a day bookended by rain yesterday and predicted tomorrow. So the waves, they were not so nice.
In addition to the angry waves, we managed to make it down there just about at the height of high tide, so really there wasn't much actual beach to be had. Unlike his reaction when we took him down to the river where he bounded around and strained to go into the water, his demeanor at the beach was rather nonplussed.
Home we went, our dog now beach de-virginized. Coming down the path as we were going up was a full grown saint bernard, who looked fully ready to be sadled and ridded. Can I tell you how glad I am we have Winston -- who will no doubt grow to be a good sized dog, but for now this 25 lb puppy is a good start.

We've Been So Dog-centric lately...

...you'd be forgiven for forgetting that our little zoo by the river has four cats, too. Here, let me remind you...

Yeah, it was ridiculously cute. Adorable. For the record, Winston was asleep in the next room. How are in-room relations?

Shurik (A) is the alpha animal and he knows it. He loves to taunt Winston -- who is wholly terrified of him. He's pretty scared of all the cats, but Shurik is the only one who flaunts it.
Kione (B) just doesn't really care. She gets pissed when he takes her spot next to me on the couch, but that's about it. Winston will sometimes posture with her, but he never gets farther than that (there was once, but then he realized how claws on the nose feel).
Clementine (C) is still skittish around Winston and he postures around her quite a bit. But, to her credit, she stands her ground now. Plus it's really funny to see her puff up.
It's actually quite surprising to see Amaya (D) out when Winston isn't in his crate. She spent the first two weeks after Winston's arrival under the sink in the bathroom. She's gotten much better and will actually come out when he's passed out and motionless. This morning he caught her out and postured -- she puffed up but didn't back down. He backed off eventually, and she went back to her home under the sink. It's been slow, but she's getting there.
As for their food, Winston won't touch it; it's the same with the litter box. It's all peaceable kingdom 'round here.
